There is ample evidence that children who are struggling with mental health or learning challenges do best when all the adults close to them are on board with the diagnosis and the treatment they’re getting. Which is why it is especially distressing to parents when extended family members let it be known that they aren’t buying it: She’ll grow out of it. Why are you making such a big deal out of this? There’s nothing wrong with him that a little more discipline won’t solve. Mixed messages can seriously undermine treatment.
