Every year, we hear from people like you—those who have visited treasured historic sites and neighborhoods—about how important America’s historic places are to them...places like Cooper Molera Adobe in Monterey, California.

Since the Adobe was first built in the 1820s, this property has represented a classic tale of shared use: an intersection of folks with different origins—Mexican American, Anglo American, French American, and Native American—carrying out various occupations, each contributing to a common vision that is clearly evident in today’s Monterey.

In recent years, preservationists like you helped to address the serious backlog of restoration needs, diminished public access, and Cooper Molera’s uncertain future. After engagement with local stakeholders, the National Trust worked with a local developer to bring new life and a revitalized “shared use” to Cooper Molera.

Today, you can wander the gardens and visit the Cooper and Diaz Adobes, free of charge, to see changing exhibits on the stories of this remarkable property. Stroll from the Tuesday night Farmer’s Market to the welcoming gardens. Or host an event in the only historic barns within the city limits of Monterey. Feeling hungry? Stop at the Alta Bakery and Café and sample their thoughtfully crafted pastries. All the shared spaces embrace the history of the site and help bring it to life for visitors.

We’re thrilled by our team effort to save historic places like Cooper Molera Adobe. But we must keep working together to give people today (and those that will come after) a chance to experience and reflect on the history and stories that make us who we are.

Become a member today with a gift of $30 or more and enjoy all the benefits of membership—an exclusive canvas tote, a subscription to Preservation magazine, discounts to historic hotels and sites, and a personalized member card.

Plus, through December 31, your membership gift will be matched, doubling your impact to save historic places!

Thank you for your generous spirit and for sharing the gift of historic preservation this season. And, I encourage you, if you’re ever in Monterey, stop by the Alta Bakery and Café!

Warmest Thanks,

Kimberly Skelly, Chief Development Officer
