At this mapathon, we will support MSF projects in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The challenges that the population faces in these project locations include regular diseases outbreaks, armed conflict, and displacement. Accurate maps of the area will assist MSF teams in their work, especially in areas that are difficult to access either for geographical and/or security reasons. To provide additional context, our guest speaker will be Katherine Smith, a finance and HR manager who has worked in Rutshuru, DRC, as well as in South Sudan and Ukraine.
A special initiative founded by Doctors Without Borders, American Red Cross, British Red Cross, and the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, The Missing Maps Project is powered by volunteers around the world. Using OpenStreetMap, an open, free, and crowd-sourced platform, volunteers map underserved regions in order to provide international organizations, local organizations, and individuals with geographic data to better respond to crises.
