John,
Going into the critical impeachment vote this week, it’s important for you to know exactly what is in the articles of impeachment that the House of Representatives will be voting on.
The vote will include two articles of impeachment:
1. Abuse of Power
2. Obstruction of Congress
President Donald Trump betrayed the nation and abused the powers of the Presidency by attempting to enlist a foreign power to interfere in the upcoming Presidential election to help him win while hurting his chief rival, Joe Biden.
Cheating to win is wrong, and forcing a foreign power to help him cheat is even worse. President Trump held up nearly $400 million in congressionally approved critical military aid that Ukraine needed to defend itself from Russia, demanding that President Zelensky first announce the Biden investigation.
President Trump put his personal interests ahead of our nation’s security, and that of our ally, to the benefit of our adversary-Russia.
A President should never use that high office to conspire with a foreign nation in pursuit of personal gain. A President should never use their power to subvert our elections.
Then, when Speaker Pelosi announced the beginning of the impeachment inquiry, President Trump announced that he and his administration would refuse to cooperate. He thereafter categorically and indiscriminately defied duly issued congressional subpoenas by ordering administration officials not to appear for testimony, and by failing to produce documents. In obstructing Congress’ ability to exercise its investigatory authority as a co-equal branch of government, President Trump committed Obstruction of Congress.
John, our nation is built on a system of checks and balances. Our President is not a king — he is subject to accountability from Congress. He is not above the law. Congress is a co-equal branch of government, not his rubber stamp. We live in a Democracy, not a Monarchy.
I shudder to think of where we would be in this impeachment process had it not been for the courage of those public servants who defied President Trump and came before Congress to reveal the truth. I thank them for their service to our nation.
Oftentimes, it comes down to everyday people engaging in the process and doing what is right for the truth to prevail.
That’s why it’s so important for you to continue following this process, John. I know it can sometimes be frustrating and exhausting, but our democracy counts on you being informed and taking action.
I’ll be in touch soon with more updates --
Yours,
Hank
