Jack, it may be one of the world's most famous names in news, but not even CNN can escape the realities of the news media today—being absorbed into a new mega-media corporation with the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and coming under the influence of a right-wing billionaire.
Billionaire John Malone has sat on the board of the conservative CATO Institute and was a major donor to Trump's inauguration. He sits on the board of Warner Bros.Discovery and he thinks it's time that CNN drops its "liberal bias" and becomes more like Fox News. In late 2021, when the company was still owned by AT&T but scheduled to become part of Warner Bros. Discovery, Malone said in an interview with CNBC:
“I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing,” he said. Then he suggested a model: “Fox News, in my opinion, has followed an interesting trajectory of trying to have ‘news’ news, I mean some actual journalism, embedded in a program schedule of all opinions.”
This is the problem with having billionaire backers—they come with their own agenda. Thankfully, Daily Kos's largest source of revenue comes from thousands of regular readers and activists donating just a few dollars at a time. This makes us accountable to you, Jack, not some big billionaire backer or the board of some mega-corporation that wants to control what we say and do.
Daily Kos is proud to be the country's largest independent and progressive news media outlet. We couldn't claim to be independent without the continued support of thousands of our readers and activists.
The single most powerful thing you can do to support our work is set up a monthly recurring contribution. Can you donate $5 or whatever you can afford, a month to Daily Kos?
I understand if you can't commit to giving monthly, please consider making a one-time donation of $5 to support our work.
Thanks for all you do,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
If you wish to donate by mail instead, please send a check to Daily Kos, PO Box 70036, Oakland, CA, 94612. Contributions to Daily Kos are not tax deductible. (Please note that we may be slow to process checks during the coronavirus outbreak.)
