WASHINGTON ? State and federal correctional facilities performed 4,816,400 viral tests for COVID-19 on persons in prison from the beginning of March 2020 to the end of February 2021. Of these tests, 396,300 (8.2%) were positive for COVID-19, representing 374,400 unique infected persons in state and federal prisons.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released the National Prisoner Statistics program ? Coronavirus Pandemic Supplemental Survey, 2021 dataset through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. These data were used in the BJS report?"Impact of COVID-19 on State and Federal Prisons, March 2020?February 2021." State and federal correctional facilities performed 4,816,400 viral tests for COVID-19 on persons in prison from the beginning of March 2020 to the end of February 2021. The dataset provides state- and federal-level prison information on the following:


* number of persons admitted to, and in the custody of, U.S. prisons each month
* number of tests performed and unique number of prisoners testing positive for COVID-19
* unique number of corrections workers testing positive for COVID-19
* prisoners and corrections workers who died of COVID-19-related causes
* policies and practices adopted by state departments of corrections and the Federal Bureau of Prisons to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
