SSCS and Global Stand Together

Dear John,

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Sea Shepherd Global jointly released the following statement just moments ago;

"Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Sea Shepherd Global continue standing shoulder-to-shoulder in defense of marine wildlife around the world.

For decades, the words “Sea Shepherd” have been synonymous with the fight to protect endangered species and protecting the oceans habitats. This work is more important now than ever as the world establishes Marine Protected Areas that must actually be “protected,” and as entire species battle extinction.

Sea Shepherd Global and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will continue to lead with direct action. With our shared mission and our groundbreaking initiatives, we continue to collaborate on how best to accomplish our mutual goal of saving marine wildlife. From the Gulf of Guinea, where Sea Shepherd Global is partnering with Gabon, Sao Tome’ and Principe to patrol Africa’s largest marine protected area, to Mexico where Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is the last line of defense for the endangered vaquita porpoise, our engagement on the front lines is protecting the oceans’ inhabitants and preserving some of the most fragile ecosystems in the world.

We are a volunteer-driven global movement that is entirely donation funded by people around the world who realize the urgent need to protect our oceans.

The challenges facing marine wildlife grow every day, and all Sea Shepherd entities stand together to meet them."

Farley Mowat Headed to ZTA Earlier
Than Any Previous Operation Milagro

The legendary Farley Mowat is about to enter the Zero Tolerance Area in the Vaquita Refuge to begin our ninth year of partnering with the Mexican Navy to protect the vaquita porpoise in the Upper Gulf of California.

This will be the earliest we have ever mobilized one of our ships in Operation Milagro, and the jumpstart reflects our growing partnership with Mexico as well as our determination to protect the most endangered mammal in the world. The thirty year old Farley just completed a dry-dock re-fit in preparation for the demands of the direct action campaign, with work including overhauling the generators, updated steel plates, a new satellite dish and deck surfaces getting renewed. The work was capped off with the addition of a new logo that you can see above.

Fleet Update

As the Farley sets sail and the Martin Sheen prepares for Operation Guadalupe this Fall, we completed evaluations of the M/V Sharpie and M/V John Paul Dejoria. Both vessels have provided valuable service over the years, and both were built for 10 years at sea and actually completed more than double that with the US Coast Guard and Sea Shepherd. While our assessment led us to retire both vessels, we are most grateful to Chris and Jennifer Sharp, Eloise and John Paul DeJoria, and JP's Peace Love and Happiness Foundation for sponsoring these storied vessels. The hundreds of crew members from around the world who served on both ships take justified pride in their time on-board and the work they did together to protect endangered species.

Weeks ago, you joined us in welcoming our new ship the Sharkwater, and we are eager for it to finish getting re-tooled so it can join our IUU campaigns. We will also be announcing our new 130 foot vessel in short order, and they will join our all-vegan fleet before the end of the year. For now, take a moment to enjoy these tribute videos celebrating the legendary Sharpie and JPD and the sponsors who made their work possible.

Matching Gift Challenge Success!

Thanks to the generosity of the Ruth Stanton Foundation and William C. Bannerman Foundation, earlier this summer we launched a $120,000 matching gift challenge. By the August 15th deadline, we not only met the challenge, but nearly doubled it with $224,446 in matching gifts from 1,336 donors! This tremendous support of Sea Shepherd’s unwavering commitment to protecting the oceans is humbling and enables our captains and crews to continue our life-saving work day in and day out. Thank you to everyone who contributed, and you can still make a difference with a one-time gift or by signing up as a monthly donor with our Direct Action Crew.

Much more news soon and thank you for supporting Sea Shepherd!
