Anti-LGBTQI+ discrimination and bullying in schools is illegal, but we know it still happens all the time. LGBTQI+ students who are transgender, nonbinary, students of color, and students with disabilities face particularly hostile school climates. The Biden Administration has proposed a Title IX rule [[link removed]] that would make it clear that anti-LGBTQI+ discrimination and bullying is unacceptable and must be responded to quickly and effectively. We have until September 12 to respond to the proposed rule.

Policies like this are extremely important for our LGBTQI+ youth, especially at a time like the beginning of the school year. These protections will set the tone for educators and administrators to incorporate anti-bullying policies at the individual school level. Safety is the lowest bar we should be aiming for in schools.
