Friend,

The struggle and fight for real freedom and justice takes place internally at our organizations just as much as it does externally in our public-facing work. Truly committing to our anti-racism, anti-patriarchal, anti-ableism, and anti-capitalism work means starting with honoring each MediaJustice team member’s humanity and dignity, as well as honoring the work and people that have come before us. It also means taking an honest look within to evaluate how institutionalized racism and discrimination affect our internal structure, policies, and culture.

"One of the enduring qualities of MediaJustice is how it encourages people to show up as their full selves. Our approach to compensation and benefits is an opportunity to allow people to show up as their full selves."

One of our main focuses for this effort is using transparency as a tool to fight against white supremacy in the workplace. We want to be clear about what we are doing, why we are doing it, the process, and where these decisions are coming from. This is where the innovation in our policy lies. MediaJustice is committed to giving each member of its staff what they need to further the organization’s mission and sustain their personhood. In doing so from an activist lens, we are putting our mission to work in meaningful ways for those closest to us. The movement starts within.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more information about our decision to transition to a more equitable operations structure that focuses on transparency, reframes capitalistic norms to consider the needs of our team, and focuses on building sustainability for our movement folks. Stay tuned to learn more from the MediaJustice team about our process and rationale.

As we embark on this journey to share more of our internal MediaJustice culture, we encourage our partners and allies to do the same.

Through transparency, clarity, and collaboration, justice-based movement teams can celebrate our power and autonomy.  We need your help to fight against the racist and discriminatory workplace practices that are deeply embedded in the U.S. labor market.

In solidarity,
Shubha Balabaer, Director of Operations
