Today marks one year since the right-wing Supreme Court allowed Texas to enact a 6-week abortion ban, stripping millions of their fundamental right to abortion care.
The Supreme Court is supposed to be the defender of our fundamental rights — instead five politicians in robes tossed aside almost fifty years of settled law to subject Texans to a cruel and unconstitutional policy that aligned with their own ideological views.
This should have been the break glass moment for every person concerned about the future of abortion in this country.
In the time since, the Court overturned Roe v. Wade and bans in states all across the country are going into effect — cutting off millions of Americans from accessing abortion care in the states where they live.
I write all of this because it’s important that you know where we are. Conservatives may have achieved their goal of overturning Roe,
but this fight is not over. The Supreme Court does not have the final say in this, we do. And it’s clear the American people will not stand by as our rights are taken away from us.
Since the Dobbs decision we’ve seen a surge in voter registration in states where abortion bans could go into effect, we’ve seen voters overwhelmingly reaffirm constitutional protections for abortion in Kansas, and we’ve seen candidates who will fight for this issue win races that many thought were unwinnable.
I won’t promise you that we’ll enshrine abortion rights into law and expand the Court tomorrow, or next week, or even this year — but there is a way forward.
Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times before, we can and must do it again. Abortion rights, like so many others, were not won overnight. Americans fought for them in the streets and at the ballot box.
We will not win this fight if we don’t show up, so thank you for being a part of this,
