POPULATION MATTERS SUPPORTERS' UPDATE

Dear John,

After the excitement of World Population Day in July, August is typically a quiet month, but even with some staff members enjoying their well-earned holidays, there's still much to report.

This month, we've updated our climate change and biodiversity briefings with newly released stats, while the latest issue of the Journal of Population and Sustainability was published in early August.

As sure as night follows day, Elon Musk has continued to bang his drum on population "collapse". We've offered up our alternative evidence-based view on social media and here. While he hypes up a problem that doesn't exist, we've also announced a new Empower to Plan partner, which is doing vital work tackling real problems faced by people in Venezuela.

Finally, please keep your eyes peeled for the launch of a bold new campaign. We're currently hard at work putting the final touches to it and are excited to share it with you in the coming weeks!

Where population meets climate change & biodiversity

Our briefings and reports are essential tools in our campaign for change, and we pride ourselves on the fact that they're scrupulously researched and continuously updated. This month, we've added the new UN Population Projections and the new stats from Project Drawdown to our Climate Change and Biodiversity briefings, which consider how ethical and empowering population solutions can help us solve these crises.

The relationship between the environment & human numbers

The Journal of Population & Sustainability is an editorially independent academic journal, dedicated to exploring the complex relationship between the Earth and its human population. This edition includes a piece by Chris Tucker, in which he boldly proposes how he believes we could arrive at a sustainable world population of 3 billion by the early part of the next century, using initiatives such as education for girls and unrestricted access to family planning.

Population growth and its impact on biodiversity

As we've written about many times before, human population growth is having a devastating impact on the Earth's biodiversity. As we look towards the adoption of a new international biodiversity agreement in December, Senior Campaigner Andrew Howard takes a look at how the current draft agreement tackles population growth as an indirect driver of biodiversity loss.

The environment and human wellbeing

In June, Population Matters’ Researcher and Policy Adviser Monica Scigliano travelled to Finland to present a paper at the Planetary Futures of Health and Wellbeing conference. Earlier this summer, a report was released by the United Nations Population Fund detailing trends in adolescent childbearing in low- and middle-income countries. The report's findings highlight that so much more needs to be done to improve the lives of adolescent girls around the world.

Protect Insects from Pesticides

If you are a British citizen or UK resident, please sign this parliamentary petition entitled Save the bees: cut hazardous pesticides and support nature-friendly farming.

We are in a biodiversity crisis with insects, including pollinators, particularly in trouble.

Modern, industrial-scale agriculture, driven by population growth and with its heavy reliance on pesticides, is a key contributing factor. Take action as part of our HUMANATURE campaign’s Insect Populations Matter initiative and do your bit to protect bees and other crucial insects from these hazardous chemicals.

This action is only for British citizens or UK residents. If you live in another country but have friends and/or family in the UK, you can take part by sharing the action with them.
