A macbook littered with stickers, a fresh notebook, and the most stylish backpack. Every student should walk into their school with everything they need to thrive. But what they really need is already waiting at school for them—supportive educators.
Just one visibly supportive educator in a school can help LGBTQ+ students feel safer and more seen. Educators can advocate on LGBTQ+ students’ behalf to school administration, directly implement LGBTQ+ content in class curriculum, address anti-LGBTQ+ bullying or harassment, and serve as advisors for students to formally organize supportive groups at school.
For many students, having adult allies in school to whom they can turn for support — or even simply knowing that LGBTQ+ allies exist at their school — creates a more welcoming and safe environment for students to learn.
John, I’m asking you to back up these supportive educators with a donation to GLSEN.
GLSEN is actively developing new LGBTQ-inclusive classroom resources and professional development training to empower educators to more confidently engage in LGBTQ-inclusive and supportive practices. With your support, we can ensure that our nation’s schools provide safe and healthy environments where all students can learn, grow, and thrive.
