Dear John,
When we organize, we can combat climate change and build the sustainable future we need.
This year we’ve witnessed record heat waves, severe flooding, and worsening droughts. The climate crisis isn’t just approaching—we’re already submerged.
That’s why we’re proud that in New York, we passed the most ambitious goals in the country to reduce emissions and curb our reliance on fossil fuels. But in our transition to a renewable energy economy, we must not leave any workers behind, and ALIGN is recognizing the fight for a just transition with two of our 2022 Movement Builders Awards honorees:
- As President of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 1-2, James Shillitto has mobilized workers to be leaders in the transition to a clean energy economy. This year, he’s supported fossil fuel workers in Ravenswood transitioning into green, union jobs, investing in environmental justice in one of Queens’ most impacted neighborhoods.
- And upstate, PUSH Buffalo Executive Director Rahwa Ghirmatzion has brought solar power and clean energy jobs to communities of color in Buffalo, building a powerful, grassroots movement toward a regenerative economy.
Climate justice means worker justice, and these climate leaders are charting the path to a better world for all of us.
Join us in celebrating worker power for a clean future at the Movement Builders Awards, supporting our nonprofit mission to organize labor and communities for a more just and sustainable New York. We rely on contributions from allies like you to fund our year-round work addressing the root causes of racial and economic injustice, and we hope you’ll join us to celebrate the strength of our growing movement.
