The Emergency Shelter Task Force (“Task Force”) is charged by the Anchorage Assembly with recommending options for emergency shelter for the winter of 2022-2023 (approximately October to April) for adults experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Anchorage. A separate body will address immediate emergency shelter needs and provide updates to the Task Force for awareness and opportunities for alignment.

The Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness (ACEH) works with allies in the community to design, create, and lead the implementation of the Anchorage community plan on homelessness. More about ACEH ([link removed])


** Hud CoC SNOFO Office Hours: Wednesday, September 7th, 3-5 pm
------------------------------------------------------------

This year, HUD has released the Special Notice of Funding Opportunity to address Unsheltered Homelessness (SNOFO).
In this meeting, the Anchorage Coalition to End Homelessness (ACEH) grants staff will provide technical assistance, answer questions, and review due dates.

ACEH will be hosting another Q&A session on 8/7/22. The link for the 8/7 session is the same as the one for today.

** Food Bank of Alaska

The Food Bank of Alaska is to holding three sessions to answer questions or brainstorm ideas for the food bank and food pantry infrastructure grant. ** Shiloh Community Housing

Shiloh Community Resource Center Fair
The key objective of the fair is to inspire the community to vote in the November 8, 2022 General Election, provide education on Rank Choice Voting, and showcase the new Community Resource Center currently in development.

The Resource Center is being renovated to become a centralized location where residents can access services and the community can gather.

Fixing systems, not people

Charlottesville is in the “last-mile” of functional zero, a milestone rendering veteran homelessness rare and brief

After returning from the Army, Alexander struggled to maintain consistent employment due to mental health issues that manifested during his service. Fired for taking too many sick days, he struggled to make rent payments and was evicted.

Because Alexander lives in a city with a well-functioning homeless response system, he is now back in a home.

Charlottesville, Virginia, is in the “last mile” of reaching functional zero for veterans. The team is focusing on how they can improve the homeless response system itself — not the people having to navigate it.

As Alexander explains, when you’re homeless, “you feel that somehow it’s your fault, even though it’s the system that created this problem.”

** National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC)

Recap of 8/29 Homelessness & Housing First Webinar

More than 5,500 people registered for the Homelessness and Housing First webinar hosted by NLIHC, the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) on August 29! Thank you to all who attended!

The webinar, “Homelessness is a Housing Problem,” began with a presentation by Gregg Colburn, a professor at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments. Professor Colburn shared research he conducted with data journalist Clayton Aldern that found that housing market conditions – not mental illness, drug use, poverty, weather, generosity of public assistance, or low income mobility – explain why some communities have higher rates of homelessness than others.

Ana Rausch and Jessica Preheim of the Coalition for the Homeless of Houston/Harris County shared how Houston has used Housing First to successfully house 25,000 people experiencing homelessness. Continue Reading... ([link removed])
