Hi John.
I know good ideas can come from Republicans and Democrats. And thankfully, one crucial area where both parties can find common ground is community safety.
Our police officers have very difficult jobs. My mom is an Army veteran who worked closely with law enforcement officials and served in law enforcement for some time herself. We need to support our police officers, emergency responders, and our communities to keep our neighborhoods safe.
So today, I’m pleased to share some key public safety updates, including progress we're making on federal funds for the Olathe Police and Fire Departments. Please click here to learn more about it.
Earlier today, I was glad to meet with the Olathe Police and Fire Departments to check-in on two public safety projects I’m sponsoring for federal funding.
I’m pleased to share the House Appropriations Committee has approved two community project funding requests I sponsored for the Olathe Police and Fire Departments. This is a good step in the right direction, and I’m going to keep pushing to get these needed resources to our region.
The Police Department’s Mobile Command Unit, and the Fire Department’s Mobile Integrated Health program, will help first responders improve their response times and effectiveness while working on the go.
I was honored to request this funding alongside local city official to help make our neighborhoods safer. These investments mean upgrading and expanding existing programs that are working well so they can work even more effectively.
We have to do more to keep our communities safe. And thankfully, we’re taking concrete and bipartisan steps to do just that.
Our communities are facing serious public safety challenges these days. Unfortunately, that includes the growing threat of fentanyl. This is now the number one cause of overdose death in the United States.
That’s why I also joined with local, state, and federal law enforcement officials last week to see what further actions we can take to help save lives.
I am committed to working with the law enforcement officials I met with to fight this crisis head-on, because one death is one too many.
In our state and around the country, the fentanyl crisis has become a public health emergency. We need to take action – which is why I’ve voted to hire new border patrol agents and crack down on illegal drug smuggling. I’m pushing for a safe, bipartisan, comprehensive, and humane solution to fix our immigration challenges once and for all.
I’ll continue these conversations with law enforcement, public health officials, and those in our community impacted most.
I know we can keep making progress by working together – Republicans, Democrats, and local law enforcement. This is what we can do when we work together and aren’t distracted by partisanship.
I’ve voted for bipartisan laws to fund our local police, equipment and training for law enforcement, and mental health. Our team is also working to connect local law enforcement with these funding opportunities so they can have the resources they need. For instance, late last year I was pleased to announce new federal grants from the Department of Justice to help fund our local police departments, including in Overland Park.
My job is to always serve you – regardless of party. Good ideas can come from both Republicans and Democrats and together we can keep making a difference for Kansas.
It’s an honor to serve you in the U.S. House of Representatives. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
