We got some great news out of Washington D.C. last week when President Biden announced student loan forgiveness of up to $10,000 for borrowers who earn less than $125,000 per year. Lower-income students who received Pell Grants could receive up to $20,000 in forgiveness.

This decision is a huge relief to millions of Americans, and it’s the result of years of advocacy from Democrats. I’ll be honest though – to keep the momentum going, we need to maintain our majorities in the House and Senate after the November midterms. While talking to voters on the campaign trail, I’ve had countless folks tell me how much they’re burdened by debt. Our current student loan system is predatory and it regularly results in hardworking people being saddled by payments that never seem to end. This loan forgiveness isn’t a final solution, but it’s a good start toward easing the burden on middle-class citizens.

I’m incredibly happy for my friends and family who are experiencing some relief with this news, and I’m grateful for the advocacy of Democratic activists and officials who have fought to make this happen. However, lots of work remains to be done.
