Black and Afro-descendant Liberation Around the World

For this month, in line with Black August, we’re uplifting ongoing movements for Black liberation around the world.

We’re excited to announce the formalization of our West Africa Program, which has been long in the making. The first piece below introduces our ten West African partners who are doing ground-breaking organizing in the face of multiple assaults. The second piece provides a deeper glimpse into some of this work at the regional level through Nous Sommes la Solution/We are the Solution.

We also report on a visit by members of our partner OFRANEH, who work in defense of Afro-Indigenous Garifuna communities of Honduras. They updated us on their international campaign for justice following the abduction of five community members and their recent efforts on organizing Garifuna people in the US.

Lastly, we share some powerful images and reflections coming out of a recent learning exchange around healing and justice involving organizers from the US, Puerto Rico, and Honduras.

Grassroots International Formalizes West Africa Program

We are celebrating the movements, their accomplishments, and their political visions as we publicly announce the formalization of our West Africa program.

The Frontlines Are at the Grassroots

We are the Solution is a network of movements across West Africa united by a vision of food sovereignty grounded in women-led, peasant-based agroecology.

Fighting for the Garifuna, in Honduras and the US

A recent OFRANEH delegation discussed their struggle in Honduras. They also shared a new project with us — organizing with the Garifuna community in the US.

A Movement Exchange for Healing and Justice

In May, Grassroots International, Move to End Violence (MEV), and several of our partners met in Puerto Rico for healing, reflection, and resistance.

Welcome Eva!

Grassroots International is thrilled to welcome Eva Blake as our Managing Director of Philanthropic Partnerships. As a member of the Assonet Band of the Wampanoag Nation and the daughter of a traditional chief and environmental activist, Eva has participated in social justice and community organizing all her life. She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Grassroots, and we’re honored to have her on board!
