It’s not often that the differences presented to voters in elections are as clear, distinct, and stark as they are this year.
On the one hand, we have people like my opponent Ken Buck who vote against every single bill in Congress that would materially improve the life of the people of his district: from the Farm Bill to the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act—a bill that would make predatory fuel price hikes unlawful and would empower the federal government to investigate price gouging at the pump.
Just about any legislation to make people’s lives better will be met with this answer from Buck.
Big Oil is making a killing, raking in record profits never seen in the history of the entire fossil fuel industry while working people are getting wrecked at the pump. This is an economic wrong, but it is also a moral issue: the oil and gas companies have known about their impact on climate change for decades and actively concealed that knowledge from the public. And now they are rewarded handsomely without repercussion—because of corporate stooges like Ken Buck.
This disconnect is at the heart of the problem we’re seeing in American politics: real people get the book thrown at them, subject to the full force of the letter of the law; the wealthy, connected, and powerful are judged, if at all, by an altogether different, much more lenient code. And if all else fails, they can always purchase a new set of rules from the puppets like Ken Buck that they helped put in office.
I am invested in the long-term work required to change hearts and minds, regain the trust of our rural communities, and rebuild our democracy from the ground up. But the only way we accomplish this is by making these arguments consistently and by reaching out to everyone—even those who disagree with us.
Thank you, sincerely, for being part of the SOLUTION to these big problems.
Semper Fi,
-Ike
