Our movement to end gun violence had a major win yesterday. For the first time in over two decades, Congress has reached an agreement to fund $25 million for gun violence prevention research at the CDC and NIH.

I was proud to fight alongside so many advocates — and push hard for this on the Appropriations Committee — to get this done.

My primary role in this movement is to fight inside the walls of Congress to pass laws that will save lives and end gun violence, but what we achieve is only possible so long as this movement keeps pushing from the outside.

Heading into 2020, we’re going to need all hands on deck. No doubt, this was a major win, but our fight does not end here.

To win on the big issues — like universal background checks, we need to build a political powerhouse that ultimately beats the gun lobby. We need to elect a gun safety majority in the Senate and elect a president who will prioritize anti-gun violence legislation.
