Today, the PCCC is proud to endorse Matt Brown for Governor and Cynthia Mendes for Lieutenant Governor in Rhode Island.
With the current Supreme Court's open hostility to 50 years of hard-fought gains at the national level, more battles and democracy issues will be decided in the states. But CNN reports that across the country, "More than half the GOP governor nominees have questioned or denied the legitimacy of the 2020 election." It's more important than ever to have governors who will to push back.
Matt Brown and Cynthia Mendes are well-equipped to bring real and meaningful change to Rhode Islanders. They have built local power and are leading a slate of progressives running across the state in the September 13 primary -- people who will work together to protect rights and improve quality of life. Cynthia also attended our PCCC candidate training with other progressive candidates!
They are up against better-funded candidates, so some may call this a David vs. Goliath battle. That's why they need grassroots support to win in two weeks.
Matt and Cynthia have spent their careers on the frontlines of some of our nation’s toughest issues, and have put together a bold vision for how to tackle them -- from affordable housing, to universal health care, to expanding voting rights, to tackling the climate crisis.
Matt served as Secretary of State of Rhode Island, where he worked to expand voting access by creating a first-in-the-nation automatic voter registration system and boost transparency by creating a public database to track the influence of state lobbyists. For the last 30 years, Matt founded and led non-profit organizations tackling some of the nation’s biggest challenges, from public education to the climate crisis.
Matt says, "The PCCC has played a crucial role in electing progressives up and down the ballot, and we’re thrilled that they’ve recognized our race as critical for building progressive power in Rhode Island and across the country. We are poised to show how progressives can defeat a deeply entrenched, conservative machine to win governing power and bring real change, including Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, a $19 minimum wage, and a massive investment in affordable housing."
Cynthia Mendes is a PCCC National Candidate Training alum who won a seat in the Rhode Island State Senate. While there, she has fought relentlessly for reproductive health care, government transparency, racial justice, universal health care, and climate action. She is an afro-latina single-mom and a former health care worker who prior to running for office spent her time mentoring youth in her community.
She challenged the Chair of the Finance Committee in 2020 and despite being outspent 4-to-1, won her election in a landslide.
Cynthia says, "This endorsement is especially meaningful to me since the PCCC gave me my first candidate training when I decided to run for State Senate. As an alumnus, I look forward to fighting alongside them to elect the community leaders we need in order to pass Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and tax the rich. Their endorsement shows that the movement we’re building here is capturing the imagination of progressives around the country."
Matt and Cynthia are building an exciting and progressive movement that could be a model for winning progressive power in states across the country.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
