When implemented alongside other best practices, post-election audits of paper ballots give strong evidence to support the final election outcome and give the public confidence that their vote counts. The map shows different types of post-election audit laws in place across the country, and you can learn more about what these audits mean in the “About Audits” section below the map.
See if your state has a post-election audit law in place and toggle to “Binding” or “Comprehensiveness” to learn more about these key principles we look for in good audits. Click the red button “View in Audit Law Database” if you want to take an even deeper dive into your state’s audit laws.
Audits are in the news a lot — and not always for the right reasons. Our map shows the true audit laws in place, which are very different from the sham reviews that continue to crop up across the country. Sham reviews are designed to undermine legitimate election results, mislead the public, and leave our elections less secure. We’re advocating for audits as they can and should be conducted, supporting election officials who are on the frontlines, and giving voters real answers about the trustworthiness of our elections.
Please consider a gift to support our work today so we can keep providing clear, accurate information that is vital to the health of our democracy.
