John, today’s methane pollution will warm the world more in this decade than carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels. That’s because methane is over 80 times more powerful in the near term.

In fact, at least 25% of today’s global warming is driven by methane from human actions! Methane leaks not only waste energy and increase the negative effects of climate change, they're also dangerous to our health — especially to those of us who live near natural gas wells and in areas with aging natural gas infrastructure.

Thanks to the support of members like you, we’re deploying leak-detecting instruments and sensors on airplanes, drones — and even a satellite. Our affiliate’s MethaneSAT is scheduled to launch in 2023. Its high precision data will locate and quantify methane pollution, arming communities with data they can use to demand action at the local level.

  • Defending EPA's authority to regulate methane and toxic pollutants,
  • Securing methane reduction commitments from governments and industries globally, and
  • Implementing the Inflation Reduction Act’s program to reduce methane pollution from oil and gas production and provide technical support to companies to reduce this dangerous greenhouse gas.
