Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and South Brooklyn   My friend... Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn... HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL As we approach the 21st anniversary of September 11, 2001, we're reminded of our promise never to forget those who lost their lives on that fateful day. This promise must also extend to the widows, widowers, and children of 9/11 victims which is why I've introduced legislation to ensure those left behind are compensated equitably by the United States Victims of State-Sponsored Terrorism Fund. READ MORE New York is the only state in the nation that doesn't allow judges to use discretion when setting bail, creating a revolving-door criminal justice system. That's why I've introduced legislation that would hold states with lax bail laws accountable by requiring judges to have discretion and holding states responsible for any personal injury or property damage caused by repeat offenders. READ MORE IN THE DISTRICT I've joined Congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) in spearheading a bipartisan effort to stop New York City's Congestion Pricing Plan that could charge commuters upwards of $23 to enter Manhattan south of 60th St. Not only should the MTA be audited for the billions in federal assistance they've received, they should be required to conduct full, thorough, and transparency economic and environmental reviews of the program to learn its true impact on commuters, residents, and businesses. I've testified to the MTA's board and submitted written comments voicing my concerns over the lack of transparency and seemingly rushed process to implement this plan. You can read my testimony by clicking below. READ MORE If you share the same concerns, I encourage you to submit written comments to the MTA asking for the public comment period to be extended for 90 days by clicking below. If the MTA receives enough comments opposing the program, there is the potential for the implementation process to be delayed. SUBMIT I joined House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy in a roundtable with New York law enforcement organizations where we unveiled legislative recommendations the American Security Law Enforcement Task Force developed to restore public safety in cities across America. Should Republicans take back the House, we will support and fund our police, tackle recruitment and retention issues, address crimes against police, and demand transparency from progressive prosecutors. READ MORE At our veterans' roundtable, we celebrated the progress made in our fight to save the Brooklyn VA Medical Center from closure and the passage of the PACT Act to treat veterans exposed to toxic burn pits. We’re also helping veterans cut red tape, get medical equipment and certifications. IN THE NEWS Malliotakis fosters ‘Aquaman,’ dog thrown in Harlem River, helps him to find a forever home What started off as a meeting with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) turned into fostering a dog and finding him a forever home. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) fostered Aqua, short for Aquaman, the dog that made headlines when he was thrown into the Harlem River, for a week.
