Five years ago today, Food & Water Watch members and grassroots allies helped make history when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a statewide ban on fracking.
This happened thanks to years of our tenacious activism, statewide coalition-building and powerful grassroots movement that demanded a ban and refused to settle for anything less.
Food & Water Watch is proud to be the first national organization to call for a fracking ban and stand with grassroots allies to relentlessly engage the governor on the issue wherever he went. Together, we won a historic victory.
But we’re not done. Banning fracking in New York was just the beginning — and we haven’t stopped moving forward since then.
Our fight can’t stop while fracked gas flows through pipelines in our communities, burns in local power plants and sickens people in neighboring states where fracking is still allowed.
That’s why we’re actively working on more than 50 state and local campaigns to stop or shut down fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure. Right now, thanks to your support, we’re engaged in:
19 campaigns to stop drilling and fracking
12 campaigns to stop pipelines
7 campaigns to stop fracked gas power plants.
After the New York fracking ban, with the support of our members and allies, we went on to ban fracking in Maryland and Washington State, ban fracking waste in Connecticut and pass a five-year fracking moratorium in Oregon. And we’ve impeded or blocked fossil fuel pipelines in multiple states around the country.
Thank you for standing with us and propelling these fights to victory!
When we fight together, we can defeat even the powerful, entrenched interests of the oil and gas industry. And these are fights we need to win — for people's health, for the safety of our communities and for the livability of our climate.
Onward together to 2020,
