Join CHN and our friends at FRAC to support summer meals for kids!

From our friends at FRAC:

FRAC has heard that when Congress returns after its winter break, it may decide to move a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill through the Senate. To ensure that support for summer meal sites is in the mix, we are teaming up with youth-serving organizations and Feeding America today (Dec. 17) for a Day of Action to urge Senators to cosponsor the Summer Meals Act (S. 1908) to help put an end to childhood hunger. We are also asking for your organization to sign our endorsement list.

Here are two actions you can take to show your support for summer meal sites and sponsors:

1. Call your Senators via the Capitol Switchboard (202-224-3121) and urge them to cosponsor S. 1908, The Summer Meals Act. It is bipartisan* and is the only bill currently in the Senate that supports summer meals and its sponsors and providers.

2. Sign your organization onto our list of supporters of S. 1908.

We will keep you posted in the coming weeks and months on any developments regarding the Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill. For now, make your calls, sign the endorsement list, and give yourself a very well-deserved holiday break!

S. 1908:

  • Improves the area eligibility test by lowering it from 50 percent to 40 percent to allow more low-income communities to provide summer meals;
  • Permits nonprofit and local government agencies to provide meals year-round through the Summer Food Service Program;
  • Allows all sites to serve three meals;
  • Provides grant funding to support efforts to reach underserved areas; and
  • Includes an additional provision to support meal service in disaster situations.

* S. 1908 was introduced by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). See the current list (as of Dec. 12) of cosponsors: Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Angus King Jr. (I-ME), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), Mark Warner (D-VA), Jack Reed (D-RI), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Jon Tester (D-MT). See FRAC's fact sheet and statement on the bill.
