74% of Brits want to see leadership from the UK to fight global diseases.

As we enter the final stages of the Conservative leadership race, the British public have spoken out about what they want to see from the UK’s next leader.

Polling this month by YouGov shows that three quarters of Brits (74%) want to see leadership from the UK’s next Prime Minister in fighting global diseases.

Despite significant progress over recent decades, malaria still kills a child every minute. With disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic resulting in a rise in the number of cases and deaths reported, urgent investment is needed to reverse the trend.

Polling found that 80% believe it’s important that the UK continue to invest in preventing malaria – fulfilling a pledge set out by the government in the 2019 Conservative manifesto to lead on eradicating the disease.

Brits polled wanted to see the UK use our world-class science to help people globally.

Ahead of the Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund taking place in the US next month, Malaria No More UK is urging the next Prime Minister and their Foreign Secretary to step up their commitment to the Global Fund to help deliver an urgent fight back against malaria.

Britain has played a huge role in the malaria fight through determined leadership and pioneering science. The Global Fund – of which the UK is a co-founder and has historically been a key donor – is instrumental in making sure that life-saving innovations get to the right people in the right places at the right time.

The UK’s next Prime Minister has the chance to lead the world, reinforce global health systems and help save a further 20 million lives. It’s time to call on our leaders to fight for what counts.

Thank you,

Malaria No More UK team
