Landscape project improves habitat for mule deer and sage grouse

Vegetation clearing project

The Troublesome Ridge shrub mowing project was the first project completed through the Medicine Bow Landscape Vegetation Analysis (LaVA) project. The project was aimed at improving habitat for wildlife, primarily mule deer. However, sage grouse will also benefit. LaVA was developed to address landscape-level tree mortality from bark beetles and the lack of disturbances in the Medicine Bow National Forest. *LaVA was finalized in 2020 and allows over a quarter million acres of vegetative management to occur over the next 15 years. Golden Trout rearing is proving to be successful

Back in 2009, the Wyoming game and Fish Department began an experiment to address anglers? search for gold in Wyoming?s backcountry?the gold being Golden Trout. This species is typically found in the state?s more remote areas like the Wind River Mountains, being transported in by helicopter, but in past years you may have seen them in community fisheries like Mavrakis Pond in Sheridan or Sloan?s Lake in Cheyenne. *That?s because the experiment is now a well-tuned process that produces more than 200,000 golden trout eggs each year.
