Howie Hawkins for Governor Gloria Mattera for Lt.
Governor Green Party of New York www.hawkinsmattera.org
Dear Friend,
We want to thank Greens who donated, petitioned, and encouraged us
in our gubernatorial ballot access petition drive.
The state Board of Elections found our Green Party petition had
8,592 signatures, well short of the 45,000 required by the draconian
new ballot access exclusion law enacted in 2020. We were not alone.
Seven other independent nominating petitions attempted to place a
gubernatorial ticket on the ballot and all of them failed.
The result is that only the Democratic and Republican candidates
will appear on the 2022 ballot. With the single exception of the
post-war 1946 election, 2022 will be the only year that just the
Democratic and Republican gubernatorial candidates will be on the
ballot since 1891 when state-authorized secret ballots began in New
York.
We still hope to make the ballot as a result of our lawsuit against
the new ballot access law. We argue that the law is a violation of our
1st and 14th Amendments political rights. We
lost in US District Court but our appeal is being heard by the
2nd Circuit US Court of Appeals in September. We hope to
prevail and be placed on the ballot for 2022. If not, we are committed
to mounting write-in campaign.
Our opponents are conservative and corrupt.
Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul is a corporate centrist with a
penchant for pay-to-play corruption, from another Buffalo
Billion for the Buffalo Bills’ billionaire owner to state
contracts worth hundreds
of millions to donors who gave hundreds
of thousands to Hochul’s campaign.
Republican Lee Zeldin is an election-denying Trump extremist who is
an insufferable hypocrite and fraudster. He alleged fraud in voting in
Congress against certifying the 2020 presidential election and then
got caught committing
fraud by sprinkling photocopies of petition sheets worth over
11,000 signatures throughout his petition to create another ballot
line for himself.
Our Green ticket offers the only progressive option in this
election. We want to give voice to New Yorkers who want an
ecosocialist Green New Deal for 100% clean energy in ten years,
universal public health care, a guaranteed income above poverty,
progressive criminal justice reforms, affordable housing and child
care, tuition-free public college, and an inclusive multi-party
democracy based on fair ballot access, ranked choice voting for
statewide offices, and proportional representation in the state
legislature.
Please help us bring this program to the public and build the Green
Party as the progressive alternative in New York.
We will have an online campaign organizing meeting at 7:30 pm on
Thursday, September 8. Please click the Volunteer tab below to receive
the details for that meeting.
In Solidarity, Howie Hawkins and Gloria Mattera www.hawkinsmattera.org
