When I had my older son, neither my husband nor I had paid family leave.
I had to choose between my work as a neuroscientist and taking the best care of my baby. I had to rely on the kindness of my employer, a terrible place to put working parents.
We need paid family and medical leave because Americans should be able to put their families first without losing their jobs or sacrificing much-needed income.

I was overjoyed at the birth of my son, but I had to figure out how to get my son into daycare and get back to work fast. We couldn’t find a daycare that could take on babies that young.
Fortunately, I was able to negotiate with my employer and figure out a solution.
I’m running for Congress because many parents aren’t as lucky as I was, and shouldn’t have to face these choices. We are the last industrialized nation without paid family leave.
Nearly a quarter of pregnant workers go back to work just two weeks after giving birth. Millions of Americans with ailing parents and family members are unable to take time off to care for them.
In a nation as wealthy as ours, denying workers paid family leave is cruel.
My Democratic member of Congress hasn’t signed onto the FAMILY Act yet. But I will.
