Happy TUESDAY, Indian River Republicans!!
Yes, it's true...once in a while even I, your correspondent, get a pre-planned day
off.
I'm back from a long weekend, so let's catch up!
We're on the cusp of an historic week. Plastic-face Pelosi and the Dems say that
it's impeachment time. They have failed to learn the historic lesson of the Andrew
Johnson impeachment. For those who are a bit rusty on their history, the House attempted
to impeach Johnson four times, all for the underlying twin crimes of not being Abe
Lincoln and for being hated by Congress. It is easy to see that Donald Trump is
also guilty of both those charges (or at least guilty of being hated by the House
of Representatives). On the fourth try, the impeachment charges stuck, because they
actually found a crime to attach to President A. Johnson. Speaker Pelosi et al.
have apparently done away with the Constitutional necessity of attaching a crime
to the impeachment, for the simple reason that she can find no admissible evidence
that President Trump has committed a crime. Johnson's crime arose out of a statute
later declared unconstitutional, but he was acquitted by the vote of Senators who
placed statesmanship above politics. Trump is assured of Senatorial acquittal, especially
without a crime. He faces two charges: abuse of power and obstructing Congress.
Abuse of power is mildly interesting from an intellectual and academic standpoint.
Obstructing Congress is laughable, as the cases to determine whether Trump must
respond to Congress' subpoenas are working their way through the courts.
After impeaching Trump, the House plans to pass USMCA, which is a victory for Trump.
But by rule, the Senate will not be able to take up the bill until it dispenses
with impeachment, which must take precedence over all other business. Is Nancy Pelosi
looking for political cover after a less-than-popular and doomed-to-fail impeachment?
