Hundreds of everyday items — such as fabrics, food packaging, cosmetics and toiletries — may contain highly toxic chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances).

PFAS chemicals don’t break down naturally. They leach into our food, water, ecosystems and even our bodies, and they’re called “forever chemicals” for a reason. PFAS chemicals take thousands of years to degrade. Until then they are persisting and accumulating in the environment and inside our bodies, causing numerous health issues.

The corporations that make PFAS knew about these dangers so they tried to hide the science about the risks to our health. And they continue to spend billions of dollars lobbying against regulations. We can’t let the corporate lobbyists win while PFAS slowly poisons the land, water, and us.

There are currently several bills in Congress that would help address the threat of PFAS, including:

The PFAS Action Act would force the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set enforceable limits on PFAS in drinking water and designate them as hazardous substances. The EPA recently announced that it wants to label some PFAS as hazardous substances, but we need protections to go further.

The PFAS Definition Improvement Act would ensure that the EPA uses a broad, widely accepted definition of PFAS in its regulations — getting rid of their current, narrow definition that excludes thousands of these toxic chemicals from testing and future regulation. 

PFAS contamination is widespread across the country, so it's critical for the federal government to act. That's why Food & Water Action is joining five other groups to demand action. Together, we're fighting with communities across the country that want real solutions to address PFAS chemicals.

It's time Congress passed legislation to regulate these forever chemicals. Sign the petition: Congress must regulate PFAS chemicals and hold polluting companies responsible.
