Dear reader,
With the waning days of summer comes a flurry of attention to the many pressing issues facing our U.S. education system, and we’re getting ready to return to classrooms and campuses to share those stories with you. Of course, we hope to hear your ideas as well.
As always, we are exploring trends and potential solutions. In higher education, we visited the University of Maine to learn how it has managed to increase its undergraduate enrollment when many other higher education institutions are facing steep declines.
The state’s community colleges, which are seeing record numbers of applications, are offering a range of pathways to employment aimed at making a college education more attainable – a huge concern at a time of mounting student debt: Americans owe some $1.6 trillion in federal loans.
In light of President Biden’s plan to cancel some student loans, our website is a resource for discussion and information on education debt. We are also finding that many underpaid childcare workers are blocked from public service loan forgiveness. And on the K-12 front, we looked at the latest research on what happens when schools switch to four-day weeks.
I’m always sad to see summer coming to an end, but energized by the reporting ahead. More than ever, I’m asking our readers to share ideas and questions, and to remind others to sign up for our newsletters!
