As the end of summer nears, here's a quick catch-up on some key developments in recent days.
CNN's Fredreka Schouten reports: Two counties in the crucial swing state of Nevada have appointed officials who have cast doubts about the 2020 election to oversee their elections this fall -- raising alarms among voting rights advocates less than three months before Election Day.
The new appointments come, Fredreka notes, as some voting rights advocates in Nevada say recent developments at the county level in their state -- including the push to hand-count ballots -- are raising concerns about the security and accuracy of this year's elections.
On Friday, the Nevada Secretary of State's office adopted temporary regulations for hand-counting ballots in the state taking effect October 1.
One of the new appointees "has said he plans to proceed with a dual-track process: using vote-tabulating machines and hand-counting in November to test his contention that votes can be counted in a timely manner by hand," Schouten writes.
Voting rights groups have sparked public outcry from the hand-counting push in Nevada and have said it "diminishes the accuracy, efficiency, and security of elections" in a recent letter to Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske.
