Defend 40 million people from a dangerous oil spill: [link removed]

Dear Friend,
The Great Lakes are the largest source of freshwater in the world. Right now, Canadian fossil fuel giant Enbridge is trying to build miles of pipeline to transport crude oil through Wisconsin and Michigan. Since 1968, the aging Line 5 pipeline has leaked more than 1.1 million gallons of oil in 33 separate spills across its length. In May of 2021, Michigan’s governor ordered the dangerous pipeline to shut down. But instead of complying, Enbridge has fought the order in court and proposed a new tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac that experts say could cause “a catastrophic explosion” and irreparable damage to the Anishinaabe people of the Great Lakes.
The Straits of Mackinac in Michigan is a place of immense spiritual and cultural significance to the Bay Mills Indian Community, and a sacred birthplace in their story of creation. For hundreds of years, Anishinaabe tribal nations have harvested traditional medicines, plants, and foods from the Great Lakes Basin, including abundant lake trout and whitefish. Today, over half of Bay Mills households rely on commercial fishing for all or part of their income. One year ago, the Bay Mills Indian Community officially banished Enbridge from its reservation; but Enbridge has continued to threaten their treaty-protected rights, fighting tooth and nail to silence tribal voices in the courtroom.
Right now, the Army Corps of Engineers is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement to examine Enbridge’s proposed tunnel through the Straits of Mackinac. If approved, this would place the entire Great Lakes region at risk and accelerate climate change to the tune of 23 million gallons of oil and gas transported each day.
We need your help in opposing Enbridge’s Line 5 oil tunnel and urging the Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a meaningful Environmental Impact Statement. Send a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today and help defend the Straits of Mackinac from unnecessary oil spills: [link removed]
Sincerely,
Debbie Chizewer
