Last night, Central Oregonians faced the harsh reality that a quick trip to the grocery store can now mean the last time we see a loved one. The news of an active shooter prompts a flurry of calls and texts — for me it was to my mom, who used to live on that side of town, and friends who work in the area — and the long wait for a response.
Another public place, with another AR-15. Bend became yet another statistic in our country’s failed policies on how easy it is for someone to use a weapon of war against civilians living our daily lives.
As we wait to learn more about this tragedy, there are things we already know: we should not have to live in fear of going to the grocery store or school or public areas. Many rural families, including my own, have hunted to put food on our tables -- this has nothing to do with hunting or responsible gun ownership. This is domestic terrorism. Not responding to domestic terrorism is a failure of leadership.
Our heartfelt thanks to the first responders, Bend Police, and the team at St. Charles Hospital for your quick and lifesaving response.
To the families of the victims, we grieve with you.
