There are TWO BILLS that are scheduled to be heard by the Legislature before they adjourn on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 and we need you to contact your legislators NOW to register your opposition to each one.  They could be voted on at any time.

AB 1227 – EXCISE TAX ON FIREARM PURCHASES

There are some underhanded shenanigans going on with this bill. It was amended on August 25 to create an exemption from this excise tax for anyone who has a valid, unexpired hunting license.  But don’t be deceived!  THIS IS A MISLEADING AND UNDERHANDED CHANGE!  This amendment was included to sway legislators who hunt now and again to support the bill, and is nothing more than a cheap attempt to ignore the constitutionality and to divide the opposition.  The Second Amendment community has been able to effectively stall this proposal for two years on the merits that it penalizes lawful buyers for criminal misdeeds.

This CARVE-OUT would only impact 1% of California’s population that are eligible to purchase a firearm.  99% would be out of luck.
There are 300,000 hunting licenses issued on average for California’s hunters each year.  The number of those who are eligible to buy a firearm stands at roughly 31,000,000.  The 300,000 is only 1% of that number.

SB 918 – CONCEALED CARRY RESTRICTIONS

This bill was also amended to further limit – if that’s even possible - the ability to carry a concealed weapon by expanding the number of “sensitive places” to an even more restrictive degree.

The additional controls on roadways and sidewalks make the intent of this legislation very clear: it will be virtually impossible for CCW holders to travel within their own communities without breaking the law;  the unreasonable mandate that requires drivers to circumvent streets that border schools or government buildings sets up an untenable scenario that places responsible citizens at risk.  Thus, the objective of this legislation is very clear: CCW holders will be essentially barred from carrying a concealed weapon in California, regardless of the Supreme Court’s ruling that expressly prohibits expanding the definition of sensitive places to include vast areas used by the public at-large.
