Three big things today: impeachment, scorecard and debate week!

We’ll start with the most time-sensitive: the House is voting on articles of impeachment for Donald Trump on Wednesday. This means you should be on the phones in the morning calling your reps all day and taking to the streets tomorrow, December 17, to let the House know where we stand on this issue -- nobody is above the law, not even a president. 

Second, after months of hard work across our entire movement, we released our first ever Indivisible Presidential Scorecard last week! If you haven’t seen it yet, then definitely go check it out. Make sure you’re up-to-date on how your favorite candidate stacks against the others on the issues that the Indivisible movement really cares about! 

Finally, it’s debate week, maybe. In just a few days, on Thursday, December 19, the Democratic 2020 candidates might be stepping onto a debate stage at Loyola Marymount University - or they might go elsewhere if a labor dispute remains unresolved (more below.) Like every candidate who’s made the debate stage, we stand with the workers and won’t cross a picket line. But we still want to hear what you’re thinking about the campaign now that you’ve seen the scorecard, so while we wait to hear what happens, we’d love for you to take our pre-debate survey.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos: 

 Your 4 weekly to-dos 

1. Call your Representative and demand that they vote YES on impeachment. The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the articles of impeachment this Wednesday, and while Democrats have a majority in the House, we aren’t taking anything for granted. Supporters of impeachment are being out-called in some states 3 to 1, and we’ve heard some members of Congress are still on the fence about their vote. We can make a difference: everyone must call their Representative before Wednesday and demand they vote yes on impeachment!
2. RSVP to a "Nobody is Above the Law" Impeachment Eve event for Tuesday night. Hundreds of thousands of people are getting ready to show that there is massive public support for impeaching Trump for his abuses of power and obstruction. That’s why on Tuesday night, the night before the House of Representatives takes a historic vote to impeach Trump, we'll take to the streets to declare that Nobody Is Above the Law. As of right now, there are more than 500 events on the map in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with more being added every day. Make sure to RSVP for (or host) one near you.
3. Call your Senator and demand a fair and open impeachment trial. If we make it through the House, the next step in the Senate. Despite the overwhelming evidence that Trump abused his authority, violated the law, and repeatedly tried to obstruct justice, Republicans are guaranteeing a rigged impeachment trial in the Senate. Over the weekend, Mitch McConnell said he will coordinate the rules of the trial with the White House and that there is “no chance” Trump will be removed from office. Call your Senators and demand they uphold their oath to defend the Constitution and hold a fair and open impeachment trial. The foundation of American democracy is at stake. 
4. Tell Congress to Defund Hate in the December funding bill. Congress has to fund the government by December 20, but Trump is threatening a shutdown unless he's able to continue raiding billions of dollars for his racist border wall and more immigrant detention. At the time of writing, we’re still waiting on final bill text, but we promise to keep the call page up to date, so check back there as news breaks. And of course, it’s always right to tell your members of Congress to fund the government without any increases in funding for ICE and CBP!

 2020 Update 

Last week, Indivisible released our 2020 candidate scorecard. This week, the top contenders in the Democratic field meet in Los Angeles for the final debate of 2019. See how they stack up ahead of the debate, who to watch for, and what issues are going to animate the conversation:

• The Indivisible 2020 Candidate Scorecard is here! After months of research, outreach, and close work with group leaders across the country, we released our scorecard last week to a wonderful response from across the movement. The scorecard grades candidates on their policy platform, day-1 democracy agenda, and engagement with grassroots progressives. On these criteria, Senator Elizabeth Warren’s campaign scored the highest, followed closely by Senator Sanders and Secretary Castro. Senator Klobuchar and Vice President Biden came in at the bottom of the Democratic field, scoring below 50%. President Trump received a 0% score.

• Thursday is debate night! Seven candidates are on deck to gather in Los Angeles for the final debate of the year. Who made it? Senator Warren, Senator Sanders, Vice President Biden, Mayor Buttigieg, Senator Klobuchar, billionaire activist Tom Steyer, and businessman Andrew Yang. The debate is hosted by PBS NewsHour and Politico.

• This is likely to be the most controversial debate, because of who’s not on the stage, and because of the labor dispute associated with the host, Loyola Marymount University. This debate has already been noteworthy for who isn’t expected to be on stage. After Senator Harris dropped out of the race, it quickly became apparent that there were no Black or brown candidates likely to meet the debate qualifications. In the most diverse Democratic presidential field, having a debate with no Black or Latinx voices is a great disappointment. Simultaneously, candidates are committing not to attend the debate if it requires them to cross a picket line organized by the members of Unite Here Local 11. Unite Here Local 11, a union representing food service employees, is in negotiation with the university’s food service providers, and all of the debate-qualified presidential candidates (starting with Senator Warren) have agreed not to attend if a deal is not reached.
