Team,
We recently got word that $1.6 billion – possibly the largest single contribution to a political organization – was given to a conservative non-profit group. These are the kind of groups that can raise and spend as much money as they want, and even though they’re technically a non-profit, they can still spend it on political advertising, without disclosing where the money is from, or where it’s going.
It’s a mind-blowing number on its own, but here’s some context to show you how insane one individual spending that much money is. Back in 2020, 15 politically active nonprofit organizations spent a combined $1.5 billion.
The group that received the money is led by a conservative activist that has supported everything from voting restrictions, to anti-choice and anti-climate change efforts, to supporting right-leaning Supreme Court judges. You can bet that that’s where this money is headed – and that it will be hard to trace.
Elissa has consistently fought to get dark money (the kind of untraceable money we’re talking about here) out of politics. And she, ahem, puts her money where her mouth is: she’s never accepted a dime of corporate PAC money because she never wants her constituents to question who she works for.
While this lets Elissa vote her conscience, and not on behalf of outside donors, it means that the only way Elissa is able to run for office is because of the generosity of the normal, dedicated people who support her. Average people who believe in Elissa enough to send her a few dollars here and there.
So: will you chip in today and help us show that grassroots support can still win against over a billion in dark money spending?
