Friend: Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, are responding to a sharp escalation in violence that has killed or injured thousands of people, displaced tens of thousands more, and effectively cut off access to clean water and medical care in some of the city’s largest neighborhoods.
The risks don’t stop at the city’s borders: Haitian people fleeing the conflict and seeking asylum in the United States continue to face the threat of being expelled and sent back to a country in crisis. Due to the Title 42 health order invoked in response to COVID-19, the U.S. can block and expel any Haitian migrants upon arrival—and has done so. More than 26,000 Haitians looking for safety were expelled from the U.S. between September 2021 and June 2022.
MSF is running mobile clinics in neighborhoods like Cité Soleil and Bel Air that have been cut off from essential health services due to violence. We are working to provide water and sanitation facilities. Our teams in Port-au-Prince’s Turgeau district run an emergency center that has seen a sharp uptick in admissions for gunshot wounds—mostly from stray bullets.
With people trapped by violence in Port-au-Prince, we urgently need steady, reliable support to help MSF continue to provide essential care for as long as it’s needed.
