John,

Huge news: The manual recount just concluded for Tiffany Cabán’s race for
District Attorney in Queens – but the fight is not over. Tiffany can still
win. Here’s where we’re at:

* Katz is currently up: At the conclusion of the manual recount, Katz
leads by 60 votes. Results are not yet official. The city Board of
Elections still has to certify the final tally next week – and then
there’s pending litigation over the invalidated ballots and dozens of
objections to court rulings.

* The provisional ballots could put Tiffany over the top: 114 ballots
cast by eligible, registered Queens Democrats were wrongly
invalidated. We believe that if these ballots are counted, Tiffany
will win.

* Expect a contest in court: Tiffany has a top-notch lawyer at her back
(that this community helped raise $60K to pay for!) and this fight
will not be over until every vote is counted. This is what’s required
to protect Queens voters from being disenfranchised by New York’s
restrictive, undemocratic voting laws. The next hearing is August 6
for the invalidated ballots. Tiffany’s lawyer Jerry Goldfeder is
saying “we are going to win.”

We will keep pushing to make sure the Democratic machine does not quash
reform in districts across the country where bold candidates are
challenging the status quo.

Next up, we’re setting our sights on Election Day for Jody Owens who’s
running to end mass incarceration in Jackson (Hinds County), Mississippi.
We’re building momentum to elect Audia Jones in Houston (Harris County),
Texas, and getting ready for more elections, too.

Each of these critical races is bound to be contested by the political
establishment who will pull out every trick to try to maintain power and
block reform to the justice system. We can’t let them succeed.

for public defenders inspired by Tiffany to run and transform the justice
system. They need your support to take on any challenge – and win.

Thank you for everything so far,

Real Justice team
