Dear John,

ImageOn Friday, I visited SAC Health Center to discuss women’s maternal health and contraceptive services. I’ve been working with my colleagues in the House to pass a number of bills that will help ensure affordable health insurance for Americans, address the maternal mortality crisis in our nation and enshrine the right to contraception into federal law. I am grateful to have SAC Health as a leader in our community as we work together to improve health outcomes in the Inland Empire and make sure that every single woman and family in our community has access to top-notch, affordable health care.

I also hosted a Fireside chat at California State University, San Bernardino to discuss the future of abortion rights and reproductive health in America, California and the Inland Empire. As we all know, the US Supreme Court overturned 50 years of settled law when they ruled that Roe v. Wade was unconstitutional. Women, doctors and abortion providers in several states are threated with criminal prosecution. Recently, there was one tragic story that made headlines of a 10-year-old girl rape victim from Ohio having to travel to another state for an abortion. That’s just unconscionable.Image

Thankfully, for now, California is a leader on abortion rights and a safe haven for women who need to seek abortion services. I visited the Planned Parenthood clinic in San Bernardino, and they told me that in the wake of the Dobbs ruling they had seen a 900 percent increase in out-of-state patients. I was glad to be joined by a representative from Planned Parenthood to talk through what this means for us and what we can expect going forward. I want to be clear about one thing: I will always vote to keep abortion legal and continue fighting to pass legislation codifying the right to an abortion into law.

It was incredibly inspirational to see so many young college students interested in the future of our nation and women’s rights. Happy Women’s Equality Day!

Thanks,
