Dear Georgian,
One year ago on Friday, 13 brave U.S. service members lost their lives in Afghanistan. Please join me in praying for their families. The sacrifices of their loved ones will not be forgotten.
The President cannot “forgive” debt for free. Biden just transferred the bill to millions of hard-working Americans while they are already dealing with record inflation.
Even Speaker Pelosi said last year that the President does not have the power to “forgive” student loans.
“People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not. He can postpone, he can delay, but he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress,” she said.
But Biden bypassed Congress altogether and decreed that hundreds of billions of dollars in debt will now be paid for by other taxpayers instead of those who took out the loans.
I joined colleagues in sending a letter to the Speaker, asking if she would stick by her statement last year and stand up to Biden’s overreach.
I also cosponsored the Student Loan Accountability Act to prohibit the cancellation of student loans, repeal the tax-free provisions formerly passed under the American Rescue Act, and prohibit the Treasury and IRS from sharing taxpayer information for the purpose of implementing debt cancellation.
It is unfair to force Americans who did not go to college to pay other people’s student loans, and it is irresponsible to spend billions of dollars on “canceling” student loans in the middle of a recession. I will continue to hold the administration responsible for their severe mismanagement of the economy.
As 2023 approaches, the House Agriculture Committee is working toward the next Farm Bill. This legislation shapes every aspect of ag policy and it’s critical that voices in the Eighth District are heard. We need to know what’s working and what can be improved. If you are a farmer, take a moment to provide feedback here.
As always, my staff and I are here to help. If you need assistance with a federal agency or have comments or concerns to share with me, please do not hesitate to call my Warner Robins, Tifton, or Washington, D.C. offices. To receive frequent updates, I encourage you to visit my website, like my Facebook page, follow me on YouTube, and follow me on .
Keep reading for the full update.
Sincerely,
Congressman Austin Scott
