John, with so many new activists joining our movement over the last months, we want to use a special day to tell you more about the legacy that Brady honors every day we fight to save lives.

Tomorrow is the birthday of our founder, Jim Brady, he would have turned 82 this year and we want to honor his memory by sharing the legacy he left which drives our work to this day.

Brady’s legacy means tenacity and dedication to our movement, tireless work in Congress, courts, and communities, honoring victims and survivors of gun violence, and passing lifesaving legislation. Jim was a gun violence survivor himself and survivors continue to lead our movement every day.

We’ve come a long way since Jim passed his namesake Brady Background Check Bill, but our fight is far from over: The NRA has spent decades pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into obstructing every single piece of common-sense gun safety legislation we propose, and they have a ruthless hold over a huge block of Congress. Republicans led by Mitch McConnell refuse to even consider essential reforms like banning assault weapons and expanding background checks.

Congress isn't the only place where the NRA wields its influence. Earlier this summer, the Supreme Court handed the NRA a ruling it's been craving for years: the Second Amendment guarantees the right to carry a handgun for self-defense. This is a travesty, but the NRA won't have the last word.

The gun lobby is scared when they see the progress we're making, and now is our moment to fight harder than ever to show them that Jim's work isn't over until we achieve his ultimate goal: ending gun violence, defeating the gun lobby, and saving lives. But to do that, especially as we honor his birthday tomorrow, we're asking you to honor Jim's memory by donating right now:

Jim Brady had achieved a lifelong dream when he was named White House press secretary. But on a gloomy March afternoon in 1981, a bullet tore through Jim’s brain during the assassination attempt on President Reagan. While the president survived without permanent injury, Jim was left with partial paralysis — and a determination to spend the rest of his days protecting others from gun violence.
