John,
Congressional Republicans think their lies and scaremongering over new IRS funding are going to win them the November election. They’re falsely telling voters that 87,000 new IRS agents will be knocking down their doors, guns blazing, searching for money under their mattresses.
The truth is that the new $80 billion in IRS funding will help modernize the IRS, improve customer service, and allow the IRS to audit millionaire and billionaire tax cheats who are dodging $160 billion in taxes each year―money they already owe![1]
Over the last decade, due to Republican budget cuts to the IRS, audits on large corporations are down 54% and audits on millionaires have fallen 70%.[2] That means wealthy individuals and corporations are able to manipulate our tax system and avoid paying what they owe in taxes.
Pitch in $5 today to fight back against dangerous GOP lies that are meant to rile up a dangerous right-wing base.
Thank you for all that you do to defend our democracy and fight for a tax system that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few.

John,
Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, Chuck Grassley. Each is riling up an unhinged right-wing base using lies and dangerous disinformation.
Since Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes $80 billion in funding to modernize the IRS, improve customer service, and crack down on millionaire and billionaire tax cheats, Republicans have been fear mongering about a “shadow army” of 87,000 IRS agents coming for you―everyday taxpayers. Just look at this tweet from Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX):
The problem? They’re lying. Just look at these headlines:
-
AP Fact Check: “GOP skews budget bill’s impact on IRS, taxes”
-
Washington Post Fact Checker: “Hyperbolic GOP claims about IRS agents and audits”
-
Time: “Trump Allies Are Attacking Biden For a Plan to Hire 87,000 New IRS Agents That Doesn't Exist”
-
PolitiFact, 3 Pinnochios: “Kevin McCarthy’s mostly false claim about an army of 87,000 IRS agents”
Help us combat dangerous GOP lies and disinformation! Pitch in today to keep the pressure on social media platforms to take down posts that perpetuate these lies, and help us educate the American people about how the new IRS funding will help, not hurt everyday people. Donate today!
Did you know that each year, millionaires and billionaires dodge $160 billion in taxes that they owe?[1] This is money that could be used to invest in lowering costs for working families or addressing the climate crisis. Instead, everyday taxpayers who pay our taxes are left holding the bag.
But congressional Republicans think they’ve found a political winner―scaring the American people into thinking IRS agents are preparing to knock down our doors. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) even said on Fox News that the IRS is “going to have a strike force that goes in with AK-15s [sic] already loaded, ready to shoot some small-business person in Iowa.”[2]
This is the same type of rhetoric used to rile up a deadly mob in the January 6th attack on our Capitol. And the same rhetoric used recently after the FBI searched (and found) top secret documents at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
