Lots of people have stories about why they applied for a job. I thought I’d tell you mine.
In 2013, I was working at the Attorney General’s Office in Massachusetts. Back in 2007, I’d joined as the chief of the Civil Rights Division, and had been working there ever since.
I loved that job, probably because we got a lot done. I got to lead the first successful state challenge to the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and worked to take on big banks for deceptive practices in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. It was work that I knew made a difference, and that made me excited to get up every morning.
So when I had the opportunity, I decided to apply for a new job in the same office — to be the Attorney General herself. I began a long interview with the people of Massachusetts.
From the start, we knew it would be a long shot. No one really knew who I was. None of the big endorsements went my way, and I had way, way less money.
I was running as an outsider, and at first no one thought I had more than a slim chance to win.
I laid out a bold campaign, running as “The People’s Lawyer.” The idea was that first and foremost, I’d be an advocate, standing up for the people of Massachusetts against powerful interests.
Everywhere we went, people told me they thought that was a good gameplan. So when, against all odds, we won — that’s exactly what I did.
We took on opioid companies for devastating our communities.
We sued big oil for lying about the effects of climate change.
We stood up to predatory lenders, discriminatory employers, and landlords who were forcing tenants to live in unsafe buildings.
All in all, we saved taxpayers $7 billion and protected the rights of people around our state. I’ve been proud to serve as the People’s Lawyer ever since.
Now I’m running for governor to work for the people of Massachusetts again. And two weeks from now, I’ll be in the general election. Probably to no-one's surprise, Republicans already have been spending more on TV ads than I have so far.
But that’s ok. I’ve never backed down from a big challenge, and I’m not going to start now.
In just over a week, we’ll face off in the general election. Our work is just beginning in this race. We’re going to have to cut through a lot of noise to talk about the work we want to do to lower costs, grow our economy, and protect reproductive rights.
That’s why we’re ramping up our campaign, because it’s going to take all of us to win this. I hope you’ll join us.
