Congress took action — now it's your turn

*********************
Dear Friend,

The Inflation Reduction Act is now the law of the land. The work doesn’t stop here — these investments are just the beginning.

The Act’s $369 billion for combating the climate crisis will go a long way to make sure that clean energy remains ascendant, but it’ll still take persistent grassroots activism and legal work to ensure that money is spent correctly. For example, Congress gave the Postal Service $3 billion for electric trucks, but we’ll need to keep our eye on the Postal Service’s leadership to ensure that they truly electrify more trucks than initially planned.

Other parts of the bill require a different type of activism. The Act mandates the federal government to offer parts of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s Cook Inlet for oil and gas development. There is also a side deal to move a separate bill in September for so-called “permitting reform” that could weaken core protections under the National Environmental Policy Act, the federal law that gives communities a voice in what happens to the environment around them. These giveaways will make our ongoing work to clean up our air and phase out fossil fuels more difficult, but we have no choice but to double down on our ongoing efforts.

So, while we’re celebrating the first major climate investments in more than a decade, take stock in the work that remains — and then join us in pushing the Biden administration to keep fossil fuels in the ground, toxics out of our bodies, and ecosystems intact.

Ban these dangerous pesticides

Organophosphates are a widely used class of pesticides commonly found in our drinking water and on our produce, including leafy greens, berries, and fruits. People living near fields where organophosphate pesticides are sprayed can become sick from just breathing the air. Workers are the most at risk from exposure on the job, plus increased contamination of their drinking water and food. Join us in calling on the EPA to ban organophosphates.

Keep fossil fuels out of the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes are the largest source of freshwater in the world. Right now, Canadian fossil fuel giant Enbridge is trying to build miles of pipeline to transport crude oil through Wisconsin and Michigan. If these projects are approved, the Line 5 pipeline will put the region at risk for a disastrous oil spill, and lock in fossil fuel production for 99 years. Take action today to demand a serious federal review of Line 5.

Protect the Western Arctic

The Willow Project is a disastrous drilling plan that could generate as much carbon as 66 coal plants emit in a year, jeopardize the health and traditional practices of nearby Alaska Native communities, and devastate local wildlife like polar bears, migratory birds, and caribou. Thanks to an Earthjustice lawsuit, the project is on hold for now. However, BLM just released the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement and opened another comment period to take further feedback — which means that the agency is still moving towards allowing drilling. Join us in using your voice to fight this harmful project.

Protect our public waters from new offshore drilling

Our climate cannot afford more federal offshore oil and gas drilling. Every gallon of oil extracted from our coastal floor is possible because of a lease sale. Data proves that new federal leasing won’t lower gas prices now or for decades – but it will irreversibly harm our communities and our environment, all while fast-tracking climate disaster. Tell the federal government to say no to new leases.

Stop a mine from being built in Alaska’s Bristol Bay

Alaska’s Bristol Bay is home to some of the most abundant salmon populations found anywhere in the world, a $2 billion fishing industry, and Native communities that have thrived on this resource for millennia. However, for more than a decade, the threat of a huge, open-pit copper and gold mine has loomed over the heart of the irreplaceable Bristol Bay watershed. The project has been delayed because hundreds of thousands of supporters like you have been tenaciously pushing back on the project – and we need your help again to finally stop Pebble Mine from being built.
