This holiday season, kids across the country will find hockey sticks, baseball gloves, and basketballs wrapped in colourful paper, hidden beneath trees, and tucked under the arms of visiting friends and family. As a nation, we love sport. It plays an important role in our health, development, and culture. But far too often, LGBTQI2S people are left off the team.

Parents describe heartbreaking incidences of discrimination that their LGBTQI2S kids face in sport. Studies show that LGBTQI2S youth and adults are much less likely to play sports due to feared or actual harassment, bullying, and violence. We are also all too aware of the significant lack of sports inclusion and representation in professional sports.

Immediate action is needed at all levels of sport to improve inclusivity and increase sports participation for the LGBTQI2S community. All people deserve access to the mental, physical, and emotional health benefits that sports provide. Everyone should be able to play.

Your donation today will help us provide coaches and teachers with the important training and resources needed to create safer sport spaces for our community.

Egale is taking action to highlight the effects of sports exclusion on our community. Please see our statement to the Canadian government in response to the recent World Health Organization study on physical activity.

Sincerely,

Helen Kennedy
