Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, Chuck Grassley. Each is riling up an unhinged right-wing base using lies and dangerous disinformation.
Since Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes $80 billion in funding to modernize the IRS, improve customer service, and crack down on millionaire and billionaire tax cheats, Republicans have been fear mongering about a “shadow army” of 87,000 IRS agents coming for you―everyday taxpayers. Just look at this tweet from Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX):

But congressional Republicans think they’ve found a political winner―scaring the American people into thinking IRS agents are preparing to knock down our doors. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) even said on Fox News that the IRS is “going to have a strike force that goes in with AK-15s [sic] already loaded, ready to shoot some small-business person in Iowa.”[2]
This is the same type of rhetoric used to rile up a deadly mob in the January 6th attack on our Capitol. And the same rhetoric used recently after the FBI searched (and found) top secret documents at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
