Social Security is a lifeline for the most vulnerable members of our society. Since its establishment in 1935, the program has been one of the United States' most effective and efficient anti-poverty programs.

Yet Donald Trump and his Republican allies like Mitch McConnell are threatening cuts to this vital program, citing the growing deficit. But that deficit didn't bother them when they passed massive tax breaks for the rich.

I’ve worked tirelessly to protect Social Security throughout my career, working on the House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee and chairing the board of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. When George W. Bush tried to end Social Security as we know it, I helped build a coalition to successfully fight back against privatization.

Social Security provides for retirees, people with disabilities, and the surviving families of workers who have died. A recent study found that one-third of retirees are dependent on Social Security for 90% or more of their income, while over 60% depend on the program for more than half. One in seven Marylanders receives Social Security, generating $22 billion in economic output for our state.

Social Security is a promise to workers injured on the job that they could still have a roof over their heads on put food on the table. It's a promise to our seniors that after a lifetime of paying into the program, it would be there for them to retire with dignity.
