John, you and I both know there are right-wing opportunists whose political strategy is to sow chaos in our elections. Here’s how Common Cause plans to turn down the temperature and stop them.
It’s a familiar playbook: In states like Georgia, Texas, and Florida, politicians are making wild and unsubstantiated false claims about our election system. Those lies fuel extreme anti-voter laws — which in turn cause disruptions and confusion that make us vulnerable to outright election sabotage.
They’ve been doing this for years — but unfortunately, Trump’s frantic efforts to cover up his loss in the 2020 election have taken things to the next level.
Now, more than one-third of current GOP nominees for major offices like legislative seats or secretary of state — many of whom Trump has personally endorsed — are outright election deniers. [1] They claim, without a shred of evidence, that the 2020 election was not legitimate — so they can seize power and ensure they never have to answer to voters again.
John, we’ve been fighting these insidious tactics since they first appeared, and several months ago we launched Protect the Vote 2022, our special campaign to protect voters in the midterm elections this year.
And Common Cause members like you have already mobilized to support these election protection efforts, and thousands of volunteers — more than we’ve ever seen for a midterm election — have stepped up.
But John, that is why I’m writing to you today. You see, fielding every volunteer who has signed up so far — with thousands more expected to do so before November — will require a dramatic escalation of our program.
We invest a lot of time and effort into training these folks — in de-escalation, supporting voters, and every state’s unique election rules — and we’ll need to do it this year for more people than ever before.
Our field team only needs $50 to train and support a volunteer through early voting and Election Day. That’s only $50 to station a trusted voice in their own community to potentially help hundreds of voters over the course of the election.
John, you’ve seen our comprehensive plan to block the far-right from destroying our democracy. Will you support a volunteer today to protect at-risk voters at the polls, inoculate them against dangerous disinformation online, and help ensure EVERY vote counts this year? >>
John, every day we see concerning headlines about the extremist claims running rampant this election cycle.
But working with our field team and volunteers across the country, I’m confident our plan can push back against their worst excesses, and help restore a sense of normalcy this election season.
Thanks for all that you do,
Sylvia Alpert, Director of Voting and Elections
and the rest of the team at Common Cause
